The Beagle is a merry, curious scent hound with one of the most powerful noses in the canine world — second only to the Bloodhound in scent detection ability. Originally bred for hunting rabbits and hares in packs, Beagles today are popular family dogs, detection dogs (airports, customs), and laboratory research dogs (though this use is increasingly controversial).

Beagles are compact, muscular dogs weighing 8–14 kg, typically living 12–15 years. They are notably vocal — a Beagle that has caught a scent will bay (howl) loudly, which can be challenging in urban environments. They should never be trusted off-lead in unsecured areas, as their nose will override all recall training.

Obesity — The Greatest Beagle Health Threat

Beagles have an exceptionally strong food drive and will eat continuously if given the opportunity. Combined with a relatively low exercise requirement as pets (compared to their hunting dog ancestors), obesity is epidemic in pet Beagles. Studies suggest over 50% of pet Beagles are overweight. Epilepsy and Hormonal Conditions

Idiopathic epilepsy (seizures with no identified cause) has above-average prevalence in Beagles. Hypothyroidism — underactive thyroid — is also more common in Beagles than in most breeds, contributing to weight gain, lethargy, and skin changes. Annual thyroid screening is recommended from age 4 onward.
